Museum of Contemporary Art in Cyprus

Antony Gormley

The Mouskos Foundation is currently preparing a proposal for the establishment of a new Bicommunal Museum of Contemporary Art in Nicosia, Cyprus. The proposed museum will be located within the walled city in Nicosia, built on the buffer zone as a 'gateway' museum and symbol of trust and belief in the future, and as a metaphor for a new beginning in Cyprus.

The vision is to create a 'Museum of Light', a place where people from both communities freely walk among outstanding collections of international regional and local contemporary art, in an environment that combines elements of historical and contemporary architecture. It will be a place to challenge what a museum can be. As a museum of the 21st Century it will address issues of how the public interact with art, and draw references from exciting initiatives in progressive museums of our time such as Tate Modern, MOMA, and many others across the world.
